Deimos Advances Maritime Safety with MARVISION: An AI-Driven Surveillance System for Spain’s Ministry of Defence
MARVISION will be a state-of-the-art maritime surveillance system for Spain’s Ministry of Defence, leveraging AI and satellite data to strengthen maritime security. The project, entering now its second phase of development, was awarded by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) for the Directorate General for Strategy and Innovation of the Defense Industry and is funded by the European Union through the Next Generation EU programme under the MRR framework.
Designed to detect and interpret security alerts, potential threats, and emergencies triggered by anomalous or illegal maritime activities. MARVISION utilizes advanced artificial intelligence to optimize and cross-reference detections from satellite-based Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Visual/Infrared (V/IR) sensors and AIS (Automatic Identification System) data. The system provides enhanced situational awareness by monitoring maritime traffic behavior and supporting the accurate identification and classification of anomalies, thereby contributing to more efficient maritime operations.
MARVISION will deliver an integrated operational system, validated in a pre-operational setting within a public administration operations center. It will play a pivotal role in decision-making and risk assessment for various governmental bodies, spanning areas such as national security, foreign policy, border protection, crisis management, disaster prevention, and international cooperation with allied nations.
Deimos’ innovative approach leverages the latest advancements in artificial intelligence, particularly in the processing of AIS and satellite data for maritime applications. The use of foundational models ensures that MARVISION remains at the forefront of technological innovation in maritime security.
This project is one of only two selected under Spain’s pre-commercial procurement of R&D services for maritime rescue applications, as part of the EU-funded Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR). MARVISION is also aligned with the Spanish Aerospace PERTE initiative, specifically under Action ACT9 – the Spanish Earth Observation System for Security and Defence, addressing Technological Challenge No. 1.
